How to choose a watch

With such a huge variety of watches on offer these days, and at a wide range of prices, it can be difficult to choose which watch to buy. Should you spend money on the watch mechanism, the strap or make a choice based on the features?

Here are three top tips when you’re considering investing in a new wristwatch.

How do you want to use your watch?

Consider whether you’ll be happy to take your watch off every time you bath, shower or go swimming. If that’s not a problem, then choose a watch strap made of leather or material. However, if you’re a keen sport enthusiast, then your best bet is a bracelet watch. Choose a stainless steel strap and water resistance up to a minimum of 100 metres.

How accurately do you want your watch to keep time?

Quartz watch movements are the most accurate, but if you’re a watch aficionado who prefers the workmanship that goes into a quality timepiece then you’ll want to invest in a Swiss mechanical or automatic movement. You’ll just need to be happy with a minute or so per week inaccuracy.

How robust do you need your watch to be?

When you’re making an investment in a new watch, it stands to reason that you’ll want it to be hardwearing and stand up to regular use. Look out for a sapphire crystal cover, which is the hardest and most durable watch glass.

In this post, we look at what’s happening locally this summer. What a summer it has been too.
